Sitefinity's latest release, version 2.5, includes the following features:

Active Directory Support
Sitefinity supports the Windows authentication mechanism. Sitefinity can read the Active Directory of the domain where the machine with IIS is running and authenticate users based on their domain group/permissions.

Global Administration for Pages and Layouts
Sitefinity administrators can now unlock and/or take the ownership (check out) a content that was previously locked by other Sitefinity users.

URL Rewriter
Sitefinity allows using custom URL Rewriter with regular expressions syntax. For example you have products.aspx page, which manages each product, requesting a Product Id (ProdId) in the query string. You can access each product without using a query string, but using the URL Rewriter instead. It will rewrite the URLs in the following manner:
product1.aspx -> products.aspx?ProdId=1
product2.aspx -> products.aspx?ProdId=2

Performance and security enhancements
  • The processing of the content and queries was significantly optimized and improved. This will lead to less server load for sites with heavy traffic and many visitors.
  • There were some security flaws fixed that could allow an unauthorized user to access the Access database.
  • The default SQL authentication is now set to Windows authentication by default.

Support for Oracle 10 databases

    Support for Public Users and Restricted Site Areas

    Sitefinity v2.0 introduces the concept of "Public Users". Those are the general visitors of the web-site, who can be organized in Groups with different access permissions for certain site areas. As a result, you can create restricted pages that are only accessible to a given group of Public Users.

    The process of setting Public Users and their Permissions is identical to the way you set CMS Users and Permissions.

    Support for Gecko-Based Browsers
    Sitefinity v2.0 now provides support for Gecko-based browsers (Mozilla, Netscape and Firefox) not only for viewing the published site, but also for content management (Edit Site and Control Panel).
    • Edit Mode - Internet Explorer 5.5+, Netscape 4, 7+, Mozilla 1.3+, Firefox 1.0+
    • View Mode - Internet Explorer 5.0+, Netscape 4, 7+, Mozilla 1.3+, Firefox 1.0+, Safari 1.2.1+, Opera 7.5+, Konqueror

    Support for Multilingual Sites
    With Sitefinity v2.0 you can now easily build and manage multilingual sites. The application provides intuitive interfaces for localization of the page names, meta data, as well as the complete HTML content of Editable Cells.

    "Show Differences" Tool
    Sitefinity v2.0 includes a new tool, which helps Approvers to easily track the changes in the HTML content of Editable Cells. The Show Differences tool is similar to the Revision Control mode of Microsoft Word, marking (in green) all new content as well as all deleted content (strokethrough in red). This functionality is available for all present languages.

    Workflow for Third-Party Modules
    Third-party modules and user controls (such as News, Testimonials, etc.) can now pass their content through the Sitefinity Workflow mechanism. This will help content contributors in ensuring the correctness and integrity of custom content elements (e.g. news items), since they will not go Live without passing the approval cycle.

    Support for User Friendly URLs
    Sitefinity can now use page names instead of GUIDs. This singinficantly improves the user experience and comprehension about the site structure. Best of all, this does not affect the performance nor the search-engine compatibility of your site.

    Localizable Control Panel
    The localization of the Sitefinity Control Panel is based on a set of files in XML format. By default Sitefinity comes localized in English and the English set of localization files files can be translated and used for localization in other languages.

    Web Service Connector
    Sitefinity provides an out-of-the-box Web Service Connector control, which can be used for consuming data from remote Web Service providers. The Web Service Connector interface provides significant flexibility for creating templates and controlling the appearance of the data. For more sophisticated Web Services you can even call remote methods with parameters, provided in the Page query string.

    Improved API
    The Sitefinity API has been substantially improved in v2.0. DataTables and DataSets are no longer used, being replaced by meaningful collections and classes. For more information see the Developers Guide.
